Abstract
Dose rate dependence of ion beam stimulated luminescence has been measured from sapphire by contrasting ionisation excitation rates generated by ions of H+ and H2 +. Dose rates, unobtainable by changing current density, ensue as the molecules dissociate to give excitation tracks that are spatially and temporally overlapping. Energy and current selection allows equal power deposition and ion range in both cases. The new results do not support the earlier cathodoluminescence claims of a strong current dose rate effect, although some minor features are apparent.
