Abstract

The Doppler-free two-photon absorption method performed with a narrowbandc w dye laser permitted high resolution measurements of transitions from the Ba I ground state 6s21S0 to several highly excited states. The lifetimes and hyperfine splittings of these states as well as the isotope shifts of the transitions have been determined accurately. The lifetime values are in agreement with transition probability data; the hyperfine splitting results show considerable configuration interaction effects. A detailed discussion of the isotope shifts is given.
