Abstract

For the past decade, a number of U.S. institutions have collaborated with research institutions in five developing countries in research on sheep, goats and alpaca under the Small Ruminant Collaborative Research Support Program (SR-CRSP). Activities have included both degree and non-degree training, publishing in referred journals, financing and developing research facilities, equipment and animals and providing technological packages for disseminating research results. As projected to continue into the 1990s, the program will emphasize research on intensive production systems of subtropical/tropical regions and on the more extensive agro-pastoral systems of the semi-arid/arid zones. The SR-CRSP program has established long-term linkages between U.S. and host country institutions and scientists and has been an effective means of building and strengthening small ruminant research capabilities in Peru, Indonesia, Kenya, Morocco and Brazil.
