Abstract

To date, perception of investment in employee development (PIED) has consistently been linked to numerous pro-organizational behaviors. However, its link to proactive behavior remains limited, especially of those in the hospitality industry. Drawing on self-determination theory (SDT) and broaden and build theory (BBT), this study proposes that PIED is directly linked to taking charge (TC) and innovative work behaviors (IWB), and indirectly through harmonious passion (HP). Based on data from 351 employee-supervisor dyads within a large hotel chain in Malaysia, the findings show that PIED can enhance proactive behaviors by fostering HP as a mediator. It is suggested that both employee development and its perceived value enhance positive work outcomes.
