Abstract

Seventy-two college students (36 male, 36 female) responded to Likert Scales of Summated Ratings and semantic differential scales which pertained to their gernal perceptions of the oral communication skills of adult male and adult female speakers. Generally, respondents differed more significantly on items regarding male speakers. Discussion focuses on genderlect in today's society and the need for student clinicians to be aware of that particular issue as well as their own commnication styles. Also noted is the need for institutions of higher education to emphsasize oral communication as an important component in academic programs.
