Abstract

EVIDENCE-BASED ANSWER Aerobic exercise and resistance exercise programs lead to small to moderate improvements in sleep quality and decreases in use of pharmacologic sleep aids in middle-aged to elderly patients (SOR: A, meta-analysis of RCTs). Tai chi moderately improves sleep quality, latency, duration, and habitual efficiency, and reduces sleep disturbance and daytime dysfunction in the elderly (SOR: A, meta-analysis of RCTs). Baduanjin, an exercise similar to tai chi, also improves sleep quality in elderly patients (SOR: C, small RCT).
