Abstract

This paper examines the effect that previous community college attendance has on the quality of university a student chooses to attend. University quality choices under both the direct attendance and community college transfer paths are estimated for students in the High School and Beyond data set. The results indicate that overall, students choose higher quality universities if they first attend community colleges, with the largest quality increases being observed for students who come from poor families, are of low ability, or perform poorly in high school.
