Abstract

Abstract : As the Department of Defense Executive Agent for Veterinary Services, the U.S. Army Veterinary Service has broad responsibilities for providing support to all parts of the Department of Defense (DoD) . That support includes medical care for all government owned animals; veterinary support to medical research and development; zoonotic disease prevention and control; and food safety and quality assurance. The latter mission is not all encompassing within DoD. This paper reviews the division of responsibilities, within DoD, for food safety and quality assurance. The complexity of the division and the problem it causes joint operations planners are explored. A proposal for integrating overall strategic responsibility for food safety and quality assurance into the DoD Veterinary Service Activity is developed.
