Abstract

The main objective of this article is to explore the position and the development of sociology of music in the world and in Turkey. To begin with, following an evaluation of the historical development, the content and the limitations of this field, the article analyzes the emergence of sociology of music in Turkey marked by the modernization process, its social background and the early works. Examining the ways in which many social phenomena such as urbanization, migration, globalization along with culture industries and new communication technologies altered the social uses of music, the article further checks up on the means through which the complex structure of the production, reception and consumption of music is subjected to sociological analysis. Within this framework, this article aims to put forth the major works within sociology of music, an overview of the areas of study as well as the current issues and debates in Turkey. In this sense, this article intends to go through the social components and functions of music while shedding light onto the history of sociology of music
