Abstract

The aim of this paper is to present a reflection about some of the most important theories explaining the styles of playing football and their correlations with national identities. Therefore, it selected the conceptions of three renowned intellectuals: Gilberto Freyre, Roberto Da Matta and Pier Paolo Pasolini. Their theories were elaborated starting from dualisms, respectively: Apollonian versus Dionysian style; art football versus strength football; football in poetry versus football in prose. Although guided by different arguments, the three authors point to the same thesis: that there are many different styles of playing and they were naturally built, especially under the impact of cultural diversity among the countries of South America and Europe. Keywords: football (soccer), Gilberto Freyre, Roberto DaMatta, Pier Paolo Pasolini.
