Abstract

This paper presents work about a system that assists visually impaired people by providing surroundings information using object detection and haptic feedback. Ultrasonic sensors and vibration motors were used as input and output respectively with Arduino development board. The system is required to be worn by visually impaired person. According to distance of object from the person, vibration motors will give feedback by running in different patterns. Vibration motors were placed in 2x8 array at the back side of the vest and ultrasonic sensors kept at the front side of the vest. This experiment was tested by a few having normal vision and partial knowledge of vibrotactile feedback. Their experience with the five different vibration patterns were recorded. It was found from the results that one pattern out of four was not working well. Also, a conclusionon where to put the sensor and motors was drawn.
