Abstract

Summary Skead, David M. 1977. Diurnal activity budgets of Anatini during winter. Ostrich Suppl. 12:65–74. Four diurnal activities (comfort, resting, feeding and swimming) were investigated from May to September 1973 in the Yellowbilled Duck Anas undulata, Redbilled Teal, A. erythrorhyncha, Cape Shoveller A. smithii and Cape Teal A. capensis. Cape Teal spent most of their day feeding (58.6%) followed by Cape Shoveller (39,2%), Yellowbilled Duck (33,7%) and Redbilled Teal (25,8%). Cape Shovellers fed partly by straining micro-organisms from the surface of the water and partly with the head and neck below the surface. Cape Teal fed partly with the head and neck below the water and partly by up-ending, while Yellowbilled Duck and Redbilled Teal mostly fed with the head and neck below the surface. All four species favoured standing in water to preen and sleep, and bathing was an afternoon phenomenon.
