Abstract

The preparation and properties of cis-dihalide complexes of the type M(Diarsine)X2 and M(Diphosphine)X2(where M = Ni, Pd, and Pt; Diarsine =o-phenylenebisdimethylarsine and Diphosphine = 1,2-bisdiphenylphosphinoethane) have been studied. Whereas the compounds Ni(Diphosphine) X2(X = Cl, Br, l, and CNS) can be made by direct reaction between the nickel salt and the ligand, a new method of preparation was used to obtain the compounds Ni(Diarsine)X2(X = Cl, Br, and l). This involves the action of gaseous HX on the substituted dicarbonyl Ni(Diarsine)(CO)2. New compounds of palladium are reported and the first platinum derivatives of the type Pt(Diarsine)X2 have been prepared by replacing phenyl cyanide from Pt(PhCN)2X2 with the chelate group. The properties and reactions of the complexes are described. Attempts to obtain penta-co-ordinate derivatives were not successful.
