Abstract

This study aims to analyze the construction of meanings in the naming of the military coup in Brazil, focusing on the influence of Google’s algorithm. The relevance of this topic increased when Bolsonaro ordered the celebration of the 55thanniversary of the coup, in March 2019. This discursive event led to a mixing of dates (1964-2019) and influenced the search results, associating the year 2019 with the military coup. The results reveal a dispute of meanings between military “coup” and “revolution”, and the analyses indicate that these linguistic processes impact broader systems in society.
