Abstract

It is seen that the distribution voltage in the European system is higher than that in the North American system. Configuration of the distribution networks follows one or a combination of the following standard systems: radial system, open‐ring system, closed‐ring system, dual‐ring system, and multi‐radial system. These systems can be applied to establish the distribution network at either the MV or the LV level. The MV distribution networks are the intermediate networks between the sources and the distribution points (DPs) in different zones of the load area. For European distribution systems, the choice of any of the standard structures to establish the LV distribution networks depends on the type of the majority of loads and the reliability level required supplying these loads. Two typical examples of both North American and European design are provided to highlight the difference of configurations and structures of distribution networks, MV and LV.
