Abstract

The exact distribution of Trichechus manatus manatus in México is unknown because many regions, such as the state of Quintana Roo, have not been thoroughly studied. Boat and aerial surveys were carried out along the coastline of Quintana Roo, and information from local inhabitants was also gathered. The data show that of the 920 km coastline only 38·7% contains habitats of moderate or important use to manatees. There appears to be a spatial and seasonal pattern of manatee distribution. A portion of the Caribbean coast is used seasonally as a travel corridor during the period of manatee movements. The largest population of manatee in Quintana Roo, and possibly in the Yucatán Peninsula, is located in Chetumal Bay and Hondo River. Immediate action must be taken to protect the manatees in these areas.
