Abstract

Increased availability of controllable devices and overall visibility means that distribution systems can now be planned and operated in a more optimal way. However, to achieve this, it is crucial to have the underlying tools for determining these optimal decisions and settings. The work in this study discusses the formulation for a three-phase unbalanced distribution optimal power flow. The methodology is developed in Python using the optimisation package Pyomo, and interfaces with OpenDSS to import the distribution system models. Optimal settings for various distribution system control equipment can be calculated to achieve a distribution wide objective. A real-world test case is used to highlight the capabilities of the method and results are demonstrated and discussed.
