Abstract
The contents of K, Cl and Ca were determined in various parts of Mimosa pudica plant, namely in young internode (YI), aged intemode (AI), upper half (UP1), and lower half (LP1) of the primary pulvinus, secondary pulvinus (P2), petiole (Pt) and leaflet blade (Bl). Potassium is found in the following distribution Yl = LP1 > P2 > UP1 > Pt > AI > Bl and is thus localized in parts showing a great metabolic activity. Chloride follows the distribution of K except for the petiole and to a lesser extent for the young internode. Calcium content is low in the parts showing a high plasticity (pulvini and young intemode). A relationship is thus suggested between the amount of Ca and the rate of the movements which can be performed. The capacity for spontaneous and fusicoccin-induced H excretion is greater in the plant parts exhibiting the higher K content. This suggests that larger H fluxes may be required in tissues showing a high metabolic activity.
