Abstract

Three species of foxes occur in Kansas, the red fox (Vulpes fglva). the gray fox (Urocyon rivereoargentevs), and the swift fox (Vxlpes velox). Only limited reports have been published about any of the three (Stanley, 1963) although the coyote (Cvnu latrans), the only other native canid now living in Kansas, has been studied intensively by Gier (1957). This study was undertaken in the summer of 1958 and general data were gathered for two years to determine distribution of the three fox species in Kansas, to obtain reliable records of their occurrence, to estimate the relative density of their population, and to estimate hunting and trapping pressure on foxes.
