Abstract
This paper discusses local perceptions of different categories of migrants, refugees, and Muslims on the island of Kos in the aftermath of the 2015-2016 refugee “crisis.” It investigates how the presence of historical and earlier migrant and Muslim communities has facilitated the acceptance of new groups of Muslim migrants. It also reflects on how the arrival of new groups of Muslim migrants has affected the self-perception and perception of earlier and established Muslim communities. Methodologically, the paper is based on secondary sources, field research, and interviews conducted by the author on the island of Kos in June 2018.
