Abstract

523 A new approach to the delivery of an exercise physiology course has been designed through the use of the World Wide Web and RIT's Distance Learning format. Each week, students view one of ten locally-produced videotapes, then access a variety of interactive educational exercises available on a course-specific Web homepage. This site is designed, operated, and maintained through the RIT Educational Technology Center (ETC) server which is available only to those registered for the course. Faculty work directly with ETC technicians to update and modify the website using Asymetrix ToolBook II software technology. Present on-site is a bank of test questions posted each week to give students direct feedback about their understanding of concepts while informing faculty of student progress. Each response is graded immediately and directs students to one of a series of possible loops to include references to text, graphical information and/or videoclip segments extracted from the lecture material. Additional Website links are also provided as references for those looking for more information about the topic at-hand. Electronic communication occurs routinely between faculty and students via (1) conference discussions of posted topics and notes, (2) email, and (3) weekly chat room sessions all made possible through the use of FirstClass global area communications software.
