Abstract

The problem on a frequency-modulated radio pulse propagating along the magnetic field in cold collisional plasma is solved analytically. The character of distortions of a rectangular quasi-harmonic pulse and ultrawideband pulses with the widebandedness parameter ranging from 0.3 to 1.33 is considered in the case of ionospheric conditions when distortions are due to the gyrotropicity of the plasma medium. It is found that, for long paths, the radiated monopulse may split into series of ordinary and extraordinary subpulses. This effect is observed when the frequency modulation law is appropriately chosen.
