Abstract

Introduction: Disk battery (DB) ingestion in childhood is increasing in recent years. Most button battery ingestions are benign, although batteries that are lodged in the esophagus, may produce serious injury and must be removed. The risk of injuries is particularly elevated in infancy for lithium cells=20mm, just after 2h. Missed or late diagnosis can associate to cord paralysis, esophageal stricture or perforation, tracheo-esophageal or aortic-esophageal fistulas, massive bleeding. Significant adverse events are reported in literature in 1.3% of cases, including 15 deaths.
