Abstract

A correlation between the clinical course of thyroid disease and the pathological material removed at operation in a series of cases has been presented. This is based upon a classification of thyroid disease, exclusive of malignant lesions, inflammation and the rarer disturbances, which divides goitres into four groups: non-toxic diffuse, toxic diffuse, toxic nodular and non-toxic nodular. The classification of nodular goitre is simplified by emphasizing the nature of the individual nodule. A differentiation is made between true adenomas and the so-called “fetal adenomas.”
