Abstract

The research on Arab American youth concerning discrimination and developmental processes is relatively scarce but more recently emerging since the terrorist attacks of 9/11. A review of existing studies reveals various methodological weaknesses and limitations, ranging from cross-sectional designs to recruitment difficulties to sampling issues. The purpose of this chapter is to identify the various limitations and gaps in the research on Arab American youth and provide strategies to address these issues. Given the relative lack of research available on Arab American youth, researchers need to increase and strengthen the body of evidence regarding these adolescents. This chapter provides guidance on how to reach this goal. The dialogue begins with an overview of the existing literature on Arab youth development and discrimination experiences, focusing on methodological weaknesses found within each study. Common methodological weaknesses and limitations across studies are identified. Subsequently, the chapter presents strategies that researchers may implement to address these limitations, strengthen methodology, and increase the body of evidence available on Arab American youth regarding development outcomes related to their discrimination experiences.
