Abstract

It is critical to understand the various discrimination experiences that Arab American adolescents encounter in their greater environments, especially in regard to the education system. Discrimination in schools may have dire consequences for adolescent development, similar to the effects of discrimination in mainstream public. Evidence shows that Arab American youth experienced discrimination in schools prior to the terrorist attacks of 9/11. However, these incidents significantly increased after the events. Therefore, this chapter discusses how discrimination in the mainstream context has generalized into the educational system in the United States. The text presents the various forms of discrimination found in schools in general. The chapter then reverts to the experiences specific to Arab American youth in the schools.
