Abstract

We demonstrate analytically that the repulsive character of a mass impurity is stipulated by discreteness effects in the sine- Gordon system. The threshold velocity for the kink reflection by a heavy mass is calculated in the framework of the effective equation of motion for the link center in the discrete sine-Gordon chain. The result is determined significantly by the lattice spacing, and the effect does not occur in a continuum model since then the Peierls-Nabarro barrier vanishes.
