Abstract

Aggregate strength, gradation, and shape play a vital role in hot mix asphalt (HMA) performance. Many studies have demonstrated the effect of these factors on HMA performance in terms of resistance to fatigue and rutting. This paper introduces a numerical approach that account for aggregate strength, gradation, and shape to model HMA performance. The discrete element method (DEM) is the numerical tool used to achieve this approach. The approach allowed the study of the internal forces developing within the aggregate skeleton in the HMA under loading, studying the influence of aggregate strength variability on HMA performance, as well as studying the effect of blending different types of aggregates within one mix.
