Abstract

The domain of work is an important focus for understanding the key dynamics and themes of the human quest for meaning. Indeed, work, which is something few people are able to avoid over the course of their lives, offers both a laboratory for advancing the study of meaning and an important source of meaning in everyday life. In this article, we view the search for meaning through five different work-related lenses: meaning in work, meaning of work, meaningful workplaces, meaning-centered leadership®, and meaning in society. From each of these vantage points, we examine how the specific domain of work can be used as a guide in the study of meaning finding and existential analysis, as well as a practical guide for realizing the will to meaning. We also introduce a new Greek-inspired paradigm, The OPA! Way®—derived from the human needs to connect authentically with others, engage with deeper purpose, and embrace life (all of life) with an appreciative attitude—that can be used to discover meaning through the various lenses of work.
