Abstract
A follow up study was conducted among 624 men who underwent vasectomy at the Margaret Pyke Centre in London from July 1971 to October 1972 to determine the time required for them to become azoospermic. Age of the men frequency of ejaculation and time elapsed since the operation were charted against each other. Men aged 20-39 cleared spermatozoa from their ejaculate in a similar fashion; older men cleared more slowly. This difference in clearance rates was significant at all times after 6 months. For men in the 20-39 age group clearance rates were similar regardless of coital frequency; older men cleared faster with higher coital frequency rates. Coital frequency of more than 3 times weekly was associated with rapid clearance. It is possible that postvasectomy sterility may be achieved sooner than azoospermia.
