Abstract

A household survey covering one person In every 80 of the population of metropolitan Brisbane has provided estimates of the number of persons, outside of institutions, who have some disability or impediment attributable to a chronic Illness. Some 15% of the population were found to be so affected. The extent to which such disabilities express themselves In interruptions of work, housework, study, etc., and the extent to which they express themselves In limitations on the performance of ambulatory, feeding, toilet and other personal functions are investigated. The relationship of symptomatology to such disabilities in chronic illness is also explored. Some deductions are drawn as to the problems posed for community medical care and geriatric services.
