Abstract

Directional correlation measurements have been made on γ-rays of 86Sr following the electron-capture and positon decay of 86Y. The 1077 keV γ-ray (from the 2 + first excited state) was detected in a NaI(Tl) crystal in coincidence with a 20 cm 3 Ge(Li) detector. Three cascade correlations (involving the 777 keV, 1153 keV and 1921 keV γ-rays) and two 1–3 correlations (intermediate radiation unobserved) are reported. The 777 keV transition (from the 2 + state at 1854 keV) is found to be M1 + E2 with 7 ± 2 % quadrupole content. The directional correlation results, together with additional experimental evidence, lead to assignments of 4 +, 3 −, 5 − and 3 − to the states of 2230 keV, 2482 keV, 2673 keV and 2997 keV, respectively.
