Abstract

An original method and an experimental procedure are described for determining the damping capacity of a material through the phase shift between its longitudinal and transverse strains. A direct experimental evaluation is made of the effect of static tension on the dissipative properties of carbon steel and a manganese-copper alloy during flexural vibrations. The results are compared with the damping characteristics of these metals determined by the method of decaying free vibration.
