Abstract

A method is studied for the direct determination of copper in acidified urine by atomic absorption spectrophotometry. This method has the requisite accuracy, sensitivity, and specificity for clinical use. Interference by protein, and ionic components is absent. Urine copper levels obtained by this method agree with those found by colorimetric analysis following ashing. The results obtained for normal urine copper excretions are comparable to those obtained by other published methods. The method was useful in determining copper levels in the normal and pathologic ranges.
