Abstract

Introduction: Diplopia or double vision can occur with maxillo-facial trauma injuries including: ocular or orbital oedema, haemorrhage, displacement, damage to or entrapment of extra-ocular muscles or damage to cranial nerves III, IV and VI. Diplopia can also be residual post treatment. Testing for diplopia is part of a routine maxillo-facial assessment. Diplopia affects an individual's ability to drive safely. The Driver Vehicle Licence Authority (DVLA) states that patients with diplopia must inform the DVLA and must not drive. The General Medical Council (GMC) advises doctors they have a duty to inform the DVLA if they believe a patient has failed to comply.
