Abstract
Dimethyl ether (DME) has characteristics similar to liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) as a household cooking fuel. As such, DME is an attractive fuel for clean cooking. DME can be made from any carbonaceous feedstock, including natural gas, coal, or biomass, using established technologies. Given China's rich coal resources, the production and use of coal-derived DME as a cooking fuel in China could be attractive. This article reviews characteristics of DME and technology for making DME from coal. Conditions under which coal-derived DME in China would be cost-competitive with imported LPG in different regions of China are analyzed.
