Abstract

The results of an eight-year study of the Polish economy's transition from central planning, which included systematic surveys in the field through February 1997, are presented and discussed by a noted economist and former head of economic research at the Central Intelligence Agency. The paper analyzes the highlights of the country's economic recovery, exploring each significant sector and branch of industry, and stressing structural changes, use of labor and capital, and adaptation to Western markets, trade, and accelerating investment. Included in the analysis are activities in the hidden economy that are concentrated in trade and services and involve diversion of goods from state channels. 14 tables, 50 references.
