Abstract
The dimanganese(II) complex of an accordion-like binucleating tetrapyrrolic macrocycle, 1, is a functional model for manganese catalases. The rate of O2 evolution accelerates upon the addition of nitrogenous bases, the rate being correlated with the pKa of the base. The crystal structure has features similar to those of a number of binuclear metalloproteins.
