Abstract To the average semitechnical individual who, on the one hand, is subject to the whims of an aberrant computer that sends him credit card statements for an account unknown to him, or who is provoked by computer-produced sales letters in which his name is inserted at key points, digital computers are the degrading and impersonal taints of modern technology. On the other hand, to the astronaut in transit to the moon, the computer is his link with life. Between these two diverse extremes digital image processing has become a technical fact of life.
