Abstract

PIC is a set of computer programs which has been developed for the analysis of electron micrographs, with particular attention to requirements for structural analyses of biological macromolecules. PIC constitutes an integrated package of subroutines many of which were adapted from an earlier system (P.R. Smith, Ultramicroscopy 3 (1978) 153) to run on a PDP 11/70 in order to exploit the advantages of minicomputers (which are now economically feasible for many individual groups). Several special-purpose devices are controlled by PIC in our installation. These include a Perkin-Elmer 1010G microdensitometer for image digitization, a video frame buffer for rapid display of high quality image representations, an Evans and Sutherland Picture System, and a camera station. Under PIC, the control of special hardware is segregated into separate programs for ease of inclusion, replacement, or omission according to the particular requirements of a given installation.
