Abstract
The performance of a self triggered silicon microstrip detector for applications in digital beta autoradiography is presented. The detector consists of 80 5 mm strips with a pitch of 150 μm. The strips are read out using integrated electronics following a trigger derived from the detector back surface. The analogue data is digitised by a VME based ADC and fed to a microcomputer for analysis and display. The electronic noise of the prototype system is less than 5 keV (Si) rms allowing efficient detection of 14C and higher energy beta sources. A 2.4 digital image of a 14C microscale compared favourably with a conventional film autoradiograph exposed for 10 days.
