Abstract

Diffusion of C from cast iron towards steel plate in a casting, was studied. Its effect on the graphite and austenite morphology was analysed and studied carefully. The effect of Si and Mn was investigated on the C diffusion process. It was found that Si and Mn affect the C activity in different ways which affect the diffusion of C across two materials of different compositions. The diffusion layer thickness and the formation of different phases at the connected area were investigated, experimentally and theoretically by using thermodynamics and C diffusion phenomena across the interface. The results were in accordance with the experimental results. The effect of diffusion upon the material properties was investigated as well.
