Abstract
Surface diffusion of Dy adsorbed on a Mo(112) macrocrystal has been investigated experimentally using a technique of local work function measurements. The coverage profiles formed in the course of diffusion were evaluated by the Boltzmann-Matano method to extract Dy diffusivity as a function of coverage at various temperatures. Coverage dependencies of the activation energy of surface diffusion and of the pre-exponential factor were also obtained. The results show a close interrelation between the diffusion parameters and phase transitions in the Dy overlayer. The Dy diffusivity reveals a sharp peak at the early stage of the commensurate-incommensurate transition which can be interpreted as a manifestation of the soliton mechanism of diffusion in this coverage range.
