Abstract

Although dendritic cells originate from bone marrow, 1,2,3,4 they are not detectable in fresh preparations of bone marrow cells.5 We previously developed an in vitro system in which dendritic cells are produced when rat bone marrow cells are cultured for 4-5 days.6 We recently established an in vitro bone marrow culture system for mouse that enables us to use the greater number of recombinant cytokines, monoclonal antibodies, cell lines, and reagents available for this species. Similar results have been obtained in both species. This paper summarizes the major findings.
