Abstract

This paper presents a comparative study on different motor topologies used in e-mobility applications. In the first part of the paper, motor topologies without permanent magnet, induction and synchronous reluctance motors, were reviewed and compared. In this paper as the second part, the focus is placed on the motors using permanent magnet in their structure. The pros and cons of each design from performance to production and reliability are explained and compared. Both induction and synchronous motors are studied. On synchronous motors, interior permanent magnet and permanent magnet assisted synchronous reluctance motors are considered. Additionally, the influence of using both the rare-earth and non-rare-earth magnets in the rotor structure on the motor performance and efficiency is discussed. Experimental setup and measurement results on both synchronous reluctance and induction motors are presented verifying the accuracy of the simulation models used in this study.
