Abstract

Corpus-based studies have provided an accurate description of language, and its new potentials for language structure and use have many applications in language learning. This paper tries to define corpora and their different types and discuss the contribution of concordancers to language learning and teaching providing some examples. Then we see how a number of areas of language study have benefited from exploiting corpora. These areas of language that have been examined with the help of language corpora include, but are not limited to: language description, lexicography, morphology, syntax, semantics, cultural studies, computer-assisted language learning, English for specific purposes, and translation.
