Abstract

Introduction It is known that adverse drug reactions (ADRs) according to sorts of contrast media are different. However, there are few studies about incidence of ADRs considering total usage of contrast media. Thus, we investigated occurrence rate and types of ADRs according to total usage of most commonly used seven contrast media (iobitridol, iodixanol, iohexol, iomeprol, iopamidol, iopromid and ioversol). Methods We reviewed 76,682 ADRs of Korea Adverse Event Reporting System (KAERS) database reported to be caused by contrast media between January 2014 to December 2016. The 74,242 cases were finally included in this study except 238 cases considered less relevant to contrast media by causal evaluation. The 11,712,796 cases on the total usage of contrast media reported was received by Health Insurance Review and Assessment Service. Results The occurrence rate of causal ADR and serious ADR considering total usage was 0.37% and 0.02%, respectively. Considering the total usage of individual contrast media, the contrast media with the most common causal ADRs was iomeprol (0.7%) and followed by iopromide (0.59%). Of the 14 total deaths, 10 cases were caused by iopromide (71.4%) and 4 cases by ioversol (28.6%). In addition, immediate hypersensitivity (88.56%) induced by contrast media showed more frequent than delayed (11.4%). In classification of ADRs according to systemic organ class, skin and appendages disorders (63.4%) were the most common. Conclusion To our knowledge, this is the significant article about ADR considering total usage of individual contrast media. And these differences of contrast media may be useful to select it suitable to patient. It is known that adverse drug reactions (ADRs) according to sorts of contrast media are different.
