Abstract

Background: In two decades, from 1981 to 2001, H3, H1, and H2 (and, to limited extent, H5) subtypes of influenza A virus hemagglutinin (HA) were analyzed with respect to the location and structure of antigenic epitopes. For H5 HA, the location of the antigenic sites was elucidated, but not their fine structure. The antigenic sites were mapped on the three-dimensional structure of H3 HA, the only one available at the time. Results: We performed a detailed analysis of the structure of the antigenic epitopes for H5 HA and H9 HA by using recently published three-dimensional structures of H5 and H9 HA molecules. Conclusions: A comparison of our results with published data reveals a general similarity and subtype-specific differences in the structure of the antigenic sites of HA of different subtypes.
