Abstract

Astyanax fasciatus is a new aquaculture species and there is no information of the dietary essential amino acids (EAA) requirements. Whole body composition of 300 farmed fish (15 ± 7 g) was collected to estimate the dietary essential amino acids requirement based on the ideal protein concept ((each essential amino acid/Lysine) x 100). The whole body EAA (including cysteine and tyrosine) of 87.13, 24.07, 52.08, 92.01, 33.12, 44.01, 52.08, 89.51, 52.60, 12.88 and 61.06%, respectively, were obtained for arginine, histidine, isoleucine, leucine, methionine, methionine + tyrosine, phenylalanine, phenylalanine + tyrosine, threonine, tryptophan and valine. Positive linear and high correlations (r = 0.9429) among whole body amino acids (AA) profile of A. fasciatus and O. niloticus was observed. It was concluded that whole body AA profile of A. fasciatus may be used to accurately estimate the EAA requirement of A. fasciatus .
