Abstract

Stomach contents of hake collected in the Celtic Sea were examined. Hake are piscivorous, feeding primarily on blue whiting ( Microsmesistius poutassou), poor cod ( Trisopterus minutus) and Norway pout ( Trisopterus esmarki). In addition, hake feed on clupeidae ( Clupea harengus, Sprattus sprattus) in the northern area off the Irish coast, and on mackerel ( Scomber scombrus) and horse mackerel ( Trachurus trachurus) in the southern area. No correlation between predator size and prey size has been observed in stomachs. Annual food consumption has been estimated.
